Bus Roll Away Accident Prevention

Determined to prevent bus roll away accidents, National Express Group implemented a programme to install Pownall voice alert systems. This safety system warns drivers should they attempt to exit the bus without the handbrake being applied. Once the warning is activated, the park brake must be applied to silence the alarm message.

Initial trial units were fitted to buses operating in the Birmingham area. Garage staff gave immediate feedback, as they were concerned that repeated warning messages would be given while they were carrying out brake maintenance.

The team at Pownall were quickly able to address this problem. A bespoke solution was found, with temporary overrides specifically for use during maintenance and service-related work.

Safety brake locks to prevent theft

Following an internal safety review, Tardis Environmental decided to install Pownall safety brake locks to their fleet of environmental tankers.

Driver operators wear safety harnesses secured to the vehicle whilst emptying cesspits. As the vehicle engines have to be running to power on board pumps, the company identified a risk in that a thief could jump in and drive away, with the driver fastened to the rear of the vehicle by their safety fall harness.

Luckily a solution was found: with the Pownall safety brake lock activated, anyone attempting to drive away would find the vehicle brakes locked on and an audible alarm would sound.

LOCAL AUTHORITY

Safety for a mobile library

After carry out a risk assessment, a local authority identified that a playing child could release the park brake on a mobile library, causing injury and even death.

The local authority contacted Pownall for advice on a bespoke solution which would prevent this happening.

The Pownall team recommended the Ultra-SC Air Brake Lock, fitted with an air horn tamper alert that would sound should the park brake control valve be released while the vehicle is parked.
